Pregnancy and Childbirth

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, taught us how to interact with our Lord and how to conduct ourselves during an important stage of life; [having a child]. The Beloved Prophet’s teaching, peace be upon him, starts with the very beginning of one’s life. He counselled us, peace and blessings be upon him, with regards to pregnancy, childbirth, the newborn, and advised the person wanting to have children. He, peace be upon him, advised us in many and varying narrations to be careful when choosing a spouse so as to give our children the best stock possible. The Beloved Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, ordered us to start by choosing wisely [as spouses] those who are pious and adherent to the religion. By this important practice, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sought from the onset to build a righteous family life. Then, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, teaches us how to protect our offspring and how to begin the entire process of pregnancy, childbirth, and nurturing in the correct way. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, told us that if we say prior to intimacy with one’s spouse, “O Allah, keep us away from the devil and keep
the devil away from what you bless us with,” we will have offspring whom the devil can never harm. This is an amazing and really great Prophetic practice. It means that if a person remembers Allah and says this prayer before intimacy with their spouse, then they have essentially given this newborn complete protection from the devil for the remainder of his life. What is a woman’s jihad? Some of the women who were around the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, told one of them –the one that was caring for his son Ibrahim- to go and ask the Prophet [the following. They said:] ”Tell him that men have gone off with all the reward for jihad, but what about us women, do we not get anything?” So the Prophet, peace be upon him, told her that the woman in her pregnancy is engaged in jihad in the path of Allah. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, also informed women that due to the suffering, tiredness, hardship or stress they experience during pregnancy, they receive great reward from Allah. The Prophet informed us, thereby sending a message to all women, that when a woman is in the stages of pregnancy, childbirth, and nursing, she is stationed in a post in the path of Allah and if she dies, she dies a martyr. The first thing recommended for the woman and the man to do upon realizing that Allah has blessed them with conception is to make a good intention. The intention has great impact… and the Beloved Prophet, peace be upon him, has made great mention of this fact. Even the Prophets such us our Master Zechariah when he asked for a child, he said: {“O my Lord! Grant me a progeny from You that is pure.”}
He did not merely pray for progeny, but for progeny that is pure. He wanted his progeny to be pure. Scholars such as Imam Al-Ghazali as well as modern day psychologists and doctors have said that during the very early stage of pregnancy, the thing that is envisioned in the parents’ mind has great impact on the child that is developing in the womb during that very hour. So if the person was in remembrance of Allah, the [zygote in the womb] will be pure, protected, and illuminated by the light of the remembrance of Allah. Scholars recommend that a pregnant woman increases her remembrance of Allah as well as recitation of the Noble Quran so that the light of the Quran and the benefits of remembering Allah, and the blessings of one’s connection with Allah all become woven into the very being of the baby in her womb. Every time the mother feels the baby moving in her belly she should say: May Allah preserve you. May Allah accept you. May Allah protect you from satan. My Lord, protect him from satan. Protect him from calamities. Make him a righteous person! The father too should pray everyday during the pregnancy and both will see the great result, Allah willing. Allah says: {And I commend her and her offspring to You for protection from the accursed Satan} If we look at the life of our Beloved Prophet,
peace and blessings be upon him, we find that he was the father of girls. He had four daughters, peace and blessings be upon him. When they Scholars speak about the birth of Lady Fatima Az-Zahra, peace be upon her, they say that the Prophet, peace be upon him, had immense joy during her birth. When they informed him that Lady Khadija had given birth – this was before declaration of the Prophetic Mission- he hurried home, hugged and kissed the girl and said, “O Khadijah, she is a blessed child.” He, peace and blessings be upon him, had this great joy and excitement for his fourth girl. Allah [swt] says: {He grants to whom He wills daughters and grants to whom He wills sons.} Allah might grant a person a girl but this person rejects the favour of Allah as if saying, my Lord I do not want your gift; I do not like your gift. This is an area where people contradict the practice of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, by differentiating between boys and girls. The one that is not delighted to have a girl is contradicting the practice of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. We ask Allah to accept us and grant us excellence in our dealings and grant us knowledge and understanding of the life and practice of the Prophet, peace be upon him, in our interaction with what Allah bestows upon us. Allah, the Exalted said: {Say, (O Beloved Muhammad, to mankind): “If you love Allah, follow me; Allah will love you!”}
